Why Oral Care Is Included in Every Puppy Love Lux Service

Every Puppy Love Lux service, from The Royal Bath to The Kingdom Spa, includes oral care: enzyme-activated teeth brushing and a breath-refresh spray. We include it because a healthy mouth matters to a dog's comfort every day.

What veterinarians say

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) explains that preventing the most common oral disease in pets comes down to frequently removing the plaque and tartar that form on teeth that aren't kept clean.

According to the AVMA, regularly brushing your pet's teeth is the single most effective thing you can do to keep their teeth healthy between dental cleanings. Daily brushing is best, but brushing several times a week can still be effective.

Grooming care is not a veterinary dental cleaning

Our in-home oral care is a gentle, routine brushing. It is not a replacement for veterinary dental exams or professional dental cleanings. If you notice bad breath that doesn't improve, red or bleeding gums, broken teeth, or your dog pawing at their mouth or avoiding food, please see your veterinarian.

Keeping it going between grooms

Because brushing works best when it's frequent, the most important oral care happens at home. The American Humane Society suggests a gradual introduction:

  1. Start with comfort. Let your dog lick pet-safe toothpaste from your finger.

  2. Touch the muzzle and lips for a second or two, then reward.

  3. Use a soft brush or finger brush and focus on the outer surfaces near the gumline.

  4. Keep sessions short, even 20 to 30 seconds at first.

  5. Build up gradually toward daily brushing.

Always use toothpaste made for dogs, never human toothpaste.

A note on dental chews

Dental chews can help, but they don't replace brushing. If you'd like to add chews, water additives or other dental products, look for the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) Seal of Acceptance. The VOHC publishes a list of accepted products for dogs on its website.

At your next visit, feel free to ask Denise to show you how she brushes your pup's teeth so you can continue the routine at home. New to Puppy Love Lux? Call or text 239-356-0790 to request your personal consultation.
